Yoga has brought a grounded peace to Stephanie’s life-a peace that she found on four corners of her mat. Her mat was a safe space. The space gave her freedom to choose to let go freely, and love deeply, freedom to find peace in any moment of her life. Yoga taught her to stay present and keep breathing. Her breath became her connection and her power source. Choosing to inhale and take in what is meant for her and exhale what is not gave her clarity and connection to trust herself. Prior to her practice, Stephanie didn’t know she could choose what she responded to. Learning to let go allowed her to open up, find new edges and see all the good around her.

Stephanie came to Sumits KC in 2016 with a friend she admired. Her friend was growing in a way Stephanie could feel when she was with her. Stephanie came and never stopped. Her mind felt such peace. Her heart felt so good. Her body was healing.

Outside of yoga, Stephanie has been a hairstylist for 20 years . Stephanie believes yoga will help her in her other career which she passionately loves. When Stephanie is not at the studio or at the salon, she is spending time with her four beautiful children.

Stephanie decided to continue her yoga journey in yoga teacher training at Sumits KC in 2018. As a teacher, Stephanie has found the beauty in finding her voice, speaking truth. Everyone is worthy and enough. The journey as teacher is parallel with the student. Show up, love yourself where you are, love others and grow together. Stephanie loves sharing yoga with ALL people as she encouraging people to find safety […]

Robert Baran

Robert Baran

Robert Baran – Instructor
Four years ago, Robert moved from Kansas City to Scottsdale, Arizona, where he discovered Sumits Yoga.  Four years of daily (6-7 days a week) practice later, Robert committed to becoming an instructor and sharing Sumits Yoga with the Kansas City area.

Robert had always been interested in yoga and experimented with many styles or “schools”: Ashtanga, Ayengar, Bikram and Baptiste.  Each style has its benefits, but nothing provided him with the experience that Sumits Yoga provides.  “Sumits Yoga has everything that I was looking for and, I believe, something for everyone.  It’s a workout, it’s a mediation, and it’s a strength and flexibility builder.  Quite simply, it’s the most amazing, butt-kicking, mind-calming practice there is,” says Robert.

Robert is adamant that Sumits Yoga makes him (and everyone else who practices regularly) feel happier, healthier, and more peaceful than any workout, meditation, or massage he has experienced.  Robert recognizes that he needs that peace of mind because in his “free” time, he is an attorney and the primary care-giver to his three kids, ages 12, 12, and 9!  (He is still happily married, but his wife travels with work, a lot!)

In addition to being a yoga teacher, attorney, and Mr. Mom, Robert is a licensed massage therapist.  While he doesn’t currently have an active massage practice (c’mon people, he can only do so much), Robert finds that his massage and anatomy training is a great asset as a yoga instructor, helping him guide people to a safer, more correct practice. It has also given him a deeper appreciation of the benefits of Sumits Yoga.   Robert challenges, “C’mon down and let me share my passion for Sumits Yoga with you.  Give me 2 weeks, and […]

Joni Rauen

Joni Rauen

Joni Rauen
Joni spent 25 years focusing on fitness, including distance running, spinning, and lifting weights.  She came to Yoga as a student in 2009 to stretch some sore muscles, but found that Yoga encompasses so much more!  In addition to lengthening, strengthening, balancing, and opening the muscles and joints, Yoga allows students to quiet their minds, learn to be present, and tap into the peace that lies deep within.  Joni wanted to guide others into discovering both the physical and emotional benefits of Yoga.  So with that goal in mind, she became a Registered Yoga Teacher (200 hours) with additional certifications in Restorative Yoga and Reiki Level 2.
After practicing at the Sumits Kansas City studio, Joni pursued certification as a Sumits instructor.  She appreciated the friendly, supportive environment of the Sumits Kansas City studio from the moment she walked in the door.  There was a sense of community during the practice, too, with everyone supporting one another, from the beginner to the advanced student.
Offering something for everyone, the Sumits Sequence class provides an opportunity to observe progress and cultivate improved focus, while the Sumits Flow class offers a change of pace, for those who like to shake up their yoga routine. Being an instructor at Sumits Kansas City means meeting students where they are and encouraging their growth– on whichever path they choose that day.
Joni’s Yoga class will both nurture and challenge your body as you experience the beautiful shapes your body can create in a safe environment of self-acceptance.  Modifications are always encouraged so all students can feel rewarded in the practice.  There is no “goal” in Yoga- just listen to your body, face challenges without fear, and believe you can do your best!
Passionate about deepening her students’ experience of Yoga, Joni continuously looks for opportunities to attend Yoga training, workshops, conferences, and retreats.  In December, 2015 […]

Michelle Gorden

Michelle was born and raised in Iowa. Being an athlete since childhood, into college and beyond has always pushed her to try new sports and activities. Traveling to various cities in her 20’s, she found yoga for the first time at Sumits Yoga in Scottsdale, AZ. From that day forward, her passion for the practice sparked and she became a daily practitioner. Experiencing the amazing benefits of yoga, not only for the body, but for the mind too, pushed her to want to learn more. She eventually enrolled in a 200 hour yoga teacher training at Body Heat Hot Pilates and Yoga in Las Vegas, NV. Over the years, Michelle tried various styles of yoga including Ashtanga, Hatha, Bikram, and Vinyasa yoga. She enjoyed the variety, yet always missed the amazing benefits and community she received at Sumits.

When Michelle moved to Kansas City three years ago, she set out to practice and teach at various studios and finally found one of her homes right here at Sumits KC. As an instructor for three years, Michelle has been exposed to many amazing people, many of whom have remarkable testimonies of how incredible yoga has been for the human body-physically, mentally and spiritually.

Carrie Green

Carrie Green

Carrie Green

Carrie started practicing yoga while still in high school, and though her fitness routine primarily focused on weight training and running, she discovered that yoga was a nice compliment to those activities.

Yoga really became a passion for her two years ago when she discovered Sumits KC. The intense sessions provided an incredible cardiovascular workout while also helping her to gain strength and flexibilty, and peace of mind that comes from being on her mat. She enjoys the consistency that comes with the Sumits sequence, but also the diversity that the different instructors provide. Her passion led her to complete the instructor training course, which deepened her love for the art of yoga by giving her more insight into its history and spirituality.

Carrie and her husband together have 5 kids. In addition to yoga, she enjoys golf, tennis, and spending time with her family.
